What is now the Centerboard Guest House was originally built in 1886 as a residence for a prominent seafaring family. The inn nestles on a corner at the intersection of Chester and Centre Streets, where many whaling captains built their mansions. There are over 800 historically designated homes on the island, making Nantucket the largest repository of Colonial and pre-Civil War structures in the country.
